MASS CASUALTY EXERCISE

Every three years RSW is required by the FAA to put on a full-scale emergency training exercise at the airport. This activity works towards your Emergency Preparedness Eagle Required Merit Badge.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Lee County Emergency Management is looking for volunteers to participate in Southwest Florida International Airport’s Full-scale Emergency Drill.

HELP US BE PREPARED
We are looking for people who can role-play injured passengers in the airport’s emergency exercise to allow first responders to practice their skills.

Exercise will be held on:
Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2022 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.

What is a Full-Scale Drill?

  • Southwest Florida International Airport is required by the Federal Aviation Administration to hold a full-scale drill, known as an MCI (Mass Casualty Incident) Exercise.
  • The purpose of the exercise is to allow our airport and community responders to practice their skills, so they are better prepared to meet the challenges of a mass casualty incident.

What will I do as a volunteer?

  • Volunteer participants will take on the roles of airline passengers.
  • On the morning of the drill, you will be assigned a “drill identity.” You will have a card with a description of various injuries or problems as a result of the incident.
  • You will act and behave according to that description. For example, if the card says you have a broken leg, you should not be walking around.

When and where is this going to happen?

  • The exercise is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2022 at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW). You will need to be available from approximately 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
  • Parking for volunteers will be on the North side of the airfield near the Airport Traffic Control Tower. Bus transportation will be available to bring you to/from the exercise area.
  • Nov. 16, 2022 is the alternative date, should the Nov. 9 exercise be cancelled. The decision will be made no later than 4 p.m. on Nov. 8.
  • Minor children (ages 10-15) may participate if they are accompanied by a participating adult. Children ages 16 and older may participate without an adult present, but a parent/ guardian must sign the waiver form.

You must be able to attend one of the MANDATORY training sessions and submit a signed waiver no later than Nov. 1, 2022. Waivers will be provided at each training session.

BROKE BACK DOG

December 2nd – 4th

Each year Troops and Venturing Crews in the Southwest Florida Council are invited to attend a jamboree-style event to compete in a series of missions testing the skills of the Scouts. The Challenge is a way for Scouts to show off their Scouting skills and compete for the Spirit Bone as well as the coveted Top Dog Patrol trophy.

With 18 potential challenges, such as knot tying, tomahawk throwing, target shooting, fire starting and reading maps. The secret is in knowing which event to get to first. Most patrols don’t pay attention to that. They go to the events that are most fun or trivial, and by the time they get to the tough events like orienteering or the obstacle course, there are long lines. Knowing that comes from experience.

While at the Broke Back Dog Challenge, Scouts rough it, pitching and sleeping in tents, cooking on camp stoves and hauling water in five-gallon jugs.

Get ready to show your Troop 109 spirit by competing in this annual event. Start thinking up a Patrol Flag and Patrol Yell to show your scout spirit.
